Terms of Service

These terms govern your use of the PubMed Tracker Chrome extension and this website (together, the "Service"), operated as an independent project. By installing or using the Service, you agree to these terms.

1. Acceptance of terms

If you don't agree with these terms, please don't install or use the Service. We may update these terms from time to time — see "Changes to these terms" below.

2. The service

PubMed Tracker is a browser extension that lets you save, tag, and track the reading status of papers found on PubMed, with optional Pro features including saved-search alerts, streaks, and reading nudges. It is provided for personal research and study use.

3. Accounts & sign-in

Basic tracking requires no account. Starting a Pro trial or purchase requires an email address, verified with a one-time code — there is no password. You're responsible for keeping access to that email address, since it's how sign-in codes and account notices reach you.

4. Plans, trial & billing

  • Pro: $14.99 per year, billed annually through our payment processor. There is no monthly plan.
  • Free trial: new Pro sign-ups get 14 days of full Pro access before any charge. No card is required to start a trial.
  • Basic tracking: if you don't purchase before the trial ends, your account steps down to basic tracking — up to 10 active (to-read/reading) papers and 3 folders, no account required to keep using it, no time limit. You are not automatically charged when a trial ends.
  • Renewals: Pro licenses are annual and do not auto-upgrade or auto-charge without a completed purchase through our payment processor; check your purchase confirmation for the specific renewal terms shown at checkout.

5. One-device limit

A Pro license covers one computer at a time. Signing in on a new computer moves your license there instantly; this is capped at 10 moves per year to prevent a single license from being shared across many people. Papers saved while Pro was active remain in your library even if your license later expires or moves.

6. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Use the Service to scrape, resell, or redistribute PubMed/NCBI data at scale, or in any way that violates NCBI's own usage policies for E-utilities
  • Attempt to circumvent license checks, rate limits, or the device-move cap
  • Reverse-engineer the Service to build a competing product using our infrastructure or account system
  • Use the Service for any unlawful purpose

7. Your content

Papers, notes, tags, and folders you save are yours. As described in our Privacy Policy, this data is stored locally in your browser — we don't hold a copy, so we can't access, edit, or recover it on your behalf. Back up anything important using the built-in JSON export in Settings.

8. Availability

We aim to keep the Service reliable, but PubMed Tracker depends on third parties we don't control — NCBI's public APIs, our hosting provider, and our payment processor. We don't guarantee uninterrupted availability of any of these, and a temporary outage in any of them may affect features like saving, alerts, or license checks. An offline grace period (currently 4 days) keeps Pro features working through brief outages or offline stretches.

9. Disclaimer of warranties

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose. PubMed Tracker is a personal productivity tool, not a substitute for a reference manager, institutional literature-review system, or professional research infrastructure — verify anything mission-critical independently.

10. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the Service, including loss of saved data due to browser storage being cleared, uninstalled, or corrupted. Our total liability for any claim relating to the Service is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim.

11. Termination

You may stop using the Service at any time by uninstalling the extension. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms, including attempts to abuse the device-move limit or license verification.

12. PubMed & NCBI trademarks

"PubMed" is a trademark of the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). PubMed Tracker is an independent, third-party tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by NLM, NCBI, or NIH. We use the name only to describe the platform the Service works with.

13. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the Service evolves. Material changes will update the "Last updated" date above; continued use after a change means you accept the update.
